Sustainable social development is an important fundamental of Diligent's mission. Social responsibility in business Diligent uses a triple bottom line: People, Planet, Profit. According to this concept, sustainable development in business means creating values in three dimensions: People - the social impact of company operations, to people within and outside the company; Planet - the impact of company operations on the environment in the broad sense; Profit - the impact of added economic value. The triple-bottom-line concept states that doing business in a sustainable way results in triple profit under the bottom line: profit for society, profit for the environment and sufficient (not: maximum) profit for the company. In other words: doing business in a sustainable way creates value for society as a whole, for the environment and for customers, eventual stakeholders and for the company's employees. The company itself can gain a lot with a sustainable company policy: cost reduction, marketing profile, reputation and attraction on the labour market, while society and environment take profit as well. Diligent believes in doing well by doing good. Diligents way of working creates various benefits for the Tanzanian society; Environment Jatropha oil is a renwable energy source. Using the oil is CO2 neutral, this helps to stop the global CO2 concentration rise in the atmosphere, leading to global warming. Because the presscake can be used as an energy source as well, for example for cooking, and because only the product of the plant is used and not the whole plant, this helps to stop deforestation and soil erosion. Local farmers Diligent Tanzania is working with local farmers in growing Jatropha. One of the fundamentals of Diligent's aquisition is paying a fair and guaranteed price. We service the farmer with knowledge on the cultivation and guarantee a market for their product. Local collection points Local shops or farmers can serve as collection points. At these points, farmers can always get cash directly for their Jatropha seeds, offering extra income for the collection points as well. Local employers Growing, harvesting, processing and researching Jatropha offers a lot of local labour. For this reason Diligent processes the seeds to oil in Tanzania. Local communities If seed quantities are sufficient, by local pressing the remaining press cake can be used for several useful applications such as the generation of electricity. Tanzania as a whole Tanzania has enough land available to cover its own demand for diesel fuel. Hence all foreign exchange spent on the import of diesel products could be saved.
